blackout

power outage /‘atd/

water suspension /s’spen()n/

water stoppage /‘stpd/

Traditionally in English (British and American), an

electricity blackout

is also a

power cut

, which is also a

power outage

。 A

blackout

often carries the sense of accidental non-supply more than an

outage

does。

Water non-supply is traditionally

water suspension

(intentional) or a

water stoppage

(accidental)。 There’s no particular reason for it — it’s just conventional usage。 Of course, no one speaks of a water blackout (because water doesn’t ‘light’ or ‘lit’)。

水不供了應通常是water suspension(故意的)或water stoppage(意外的)。 當然,沒有人會說water blackout(因為水不會亮或不亮)。

electricity go down

power cut

power out

water be (shut/cut) off

without power/water

例:

While I was making dinner, the electricity suddenly went down, I immediately checked my neighbors to see if their power was out, too, or if only my location was affected。 And a few minutes later, the power was restored。

People have daily power cuts, daily water cuts。

The water’s gonna be shut off for the day。
