“沒有辛勞，哪有收穫”（No pains， No gains）！但有付出也不一定就能成功，“凡是規律都有例外”（No rule without exception）；故要“抱最好的希望，做最壞的打算”（Hope for the best and prepare for the worst）。這三條英語諺語給我留下難以磨滅的印象（They were given me lasting impression）。
我的英語發力是在1979年高考名落孫山之後，且從吉林人民廣播電臺的英語教學節目做起——我已“接班”並工作於中國土畜產進出口公司吉林省分公司的長春市郊大屯倉庫。
該教學節目每天早上五點開始，用的是“北京市業餘外語廣播講座”教材。從中級班起，每篇課文之後有兩句英語諺語（Proverbs），印象最深的是本文開頭的那三條。現將中級班1-3冊所有英語諺語摘錄如下。
Live and learn（活到老學到老）。Learn to walk before you run（先走後跑）。Where there is a will， there is a way（有志者，事竟成）。Practice make perfect（熟能生巧）。Strike while the iron is hot（趁熱打鐵）。Well begun， half done（良好開端，成功一半）。A stitch in time saves nine（一針及時省九針）。Easier said than done（說比做容易）。Facts speak louder than words（事實勝於雄辯）。A friend in need is a friend indeed（患難見真情）。Seeing is believing（眼見為實）。Pride goes before a fall（驕必敗）。Discontent is the first step in progress（不滿足是進步的開端）。Two heads are better than one（三個臭皮匠，頂個諸葛亮）。Call a spade a spade（一是一，二是二）。It is never too late to mend（亡羊補牢，猶未為晚）。Better late than never（遲做總比不做好）。
Birds of a feather flock together（物以類聚）。One swallow does not make a summer（獨燕不是春）。Time and tide wait for no man（歲月不待人）。United we stand， divided we fall（團結則存，分裂則亡）。A little learning is a dangerous thing（一知半解是危險的事）。Grasp all， lose all（什麼都抓，什麼也抓不住）。Never judge by appearances（人不可貌相）。False friends are worse than open enemies（虛偽的朋友比公開的敵人還要壞）。Art is long， but life is short（學問無窮，人生有限）。True gold fears not the fire（真金不怕火煉）。From saving comes having（勤儉出財富）。Force can never destroy right（武力不能摧毀正義）。Honesty is the best policy（誠實是上策）。The leopard cannot change its spots（豹子的斑點是不變的）。It takes two to make a quarrel（一隻碗不響，兩隻碗叮噹）。One is never too old to learn（活到老學到老）。Many a little makes a mickle（積少成多）。Let bygones be bygones（既往不咎）。He laughs best who laughs last（誰笑到最後，誰笑得最好）。He who makes no mistakes makes nothing（怕犯錯誤的人什麼也做不成）。As a man sows， so he shall reap（種瓜得瓜，種豆得豆）。A good medicine tastes bitter（良藥苦口）。
Brevity is the soul of wit（言以簡潔為貴）。A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush（雙鳥在林不如一鳥在手）。There is no smoke without fire（無風不起浪）。The best mirror is an old friend（老朋友是最好的鏡子）。After dinner sit a while， after supper walk a mile（午飯後要坐，晚飯後要走）。The pot calls the kettle black（五十步笑百步）。Empty vessels make the greatest noise（一瓶不響，半瓶叮噹）。Waste not， want not（不浪費，不愁缺）。Unity is strength（團結就是力量）。Never say die（永不絕望）。Speak of the devil， and he is sure to come（說曹操，曹操就到）。Knowledge is power（知識就是力量）。No sweet without some sweat（不流汗就沒有幸福）。Handsome is that handsome does（做得漂亮才是漂亮）。The best fish swim near the bottom（好魚居水底）。
